The Prototype Community Pool

From an initial set of six sites, Nor Nork was selected as the first Aquatics Armenia location. Nor Nork is a densely populated, working class district of Yerevan, characterized by urban housing and a lack of public, community recreation facilities. We are currently developing the initial phase of our project – the design and construction of our first aquatics facility in Nor Nork.

The local government agreed to donate a 3725 sq. meter parcel for Aquatics Armenia to build a community pool adjacent to a small sports school and a secondary school and near utility stations including electricity, gas, and water. Besides the availability of an affordable, appropriate site for a pool, Nor Nork had several other factors in its favor. In order for this project to be successful and sustainable, a pool will need the active participation of the community. Nor Nork’s local officials understand the pool’s potential value for recreation, health promotion, and the opportunity to build local leadership as community members take on the pool oversight.
